How do I stop my cat Poo-ing in his own fur?

Once again i'm going to have to take the time and effort to bath the cat. Most people I know don't bath their cats, they're meant to be self cleaning animals! People that do wash their cats do not do it as often as me!

My cat keeps getting his own feaces stuck in his fur! It's discusting and he smells horrible!

He does still clean himself but not around the area with the poo!

Is it because his fur is to long? (His hair is medium length, and he is a Ragdoll)

Or is it because his poo is too runny/sticky?

Should I trim the fur around his anus?

Is he lacking something in his diet? The poo doesn't look overly diahroeh like.

PLEASE HELP! Bathing is not fun for me or the cat!

Yes, you can trim and/or comb it out. It happens to mine sometimes too. Compliments on your choice of breed, they are very lovable, but the longer hair does require some maintenance. As long as his stools are mostly firm he's fine, the stools are just catching on his hair. If the stools are soft, gradually switch his food to Eukanuba, it does produce a smaller, firmer stool as there are less fillers and the food is more thoroughly digested. If the stools are still too soft after the food change, visit your vet; could be an intestinal tract problem that Albon or acidophilus could take care of. Hope this helps.

p.s. Mine don't really care for baths either, we only do it when on the show circuit.

p.s.s. I do agree with Glenn L on what he says about food quality, but EVERY Ragdoll breeder I know has at one time or another had a cat with stool stuck to it's fur (it's called a dingle-berry). May God strike me dead if I'm lying, I personally know over one hundred Ragdoll breeders; we have ALL have had to do a poo clean up at times!

I have a beautiful part ragdoll cat and I have her bottom clipped at the vets every 6 weeks for this very reason.

Don't try to do it yourself - you know how bad it is to bathe a cat, it is even harder to do a bottom clip (trust me I have tried it).

Get you little kitty trimmed about once a month, perferably by a professional groomer. Getting groomed is less stressful than getting bathed every week.

Two factors are mentioned in this question: poo and fur.

While clipping the fur will remove it, nothing addresses the poo factor. Poo is the result of diet and that is something you should be addressing as non of the ragdolls I know have this problem.

What is your cat eating that will make his poo runny enough to stick to the fur? My opinion and that of a number of progressive vets not sponsored by the pet food industry is that dry cat food should be removed from the market- it has way too little moisture (long term effects are kidney and bladder problems- these will kill a cat eventually) and way too much carbohydrate (long term effects are diabetes and tartar- if left untreated these will kill too). Because of so much carbohydrate there is also too little protein and as cats' metabolism is geared towards a high protein, low carb diet, obesity is is a result as the cats are not made to easily metabolise the pre-digested carbohydrate in their diet. Dry food is about owners' convenience, not about their pets' welfare, though this is not communicated by the manufacturers. Wet (tinned or puched) cat food is much better if it is low carb (thus no gravy) and has no added grains.

An incorrectly constituted diet is a likely cause for poo of the wrong texture as not all ragdolls or other long haired cats need their fur trimmed.

As a fastidiously clean animal, this is more of an issue for him than it is for you so action is definitely required.

i have a medium haired cat %26amp; he sometimes has that problem with the doodoo getting mashed into his fur. so i imagine with a ragdoll that it must happen a lot. i think getting him trimmed in the backside is a good idea. i trimmed my cat myself but he is VERY well behaved %26amp; will let me do anything. most cats will not.

take it to the Vet and get him or her to cut the fur around the anus.

And give it a litter box or let it go outside.
